What does it mean to be preppy?

A few weeks ago, I posted about being a prep and the comments that I get stemming from it.  You can read it here: My Name Is Royar and Yes, I'm a Prep

I have gotten some thought-provoking comments about what it means to be a prep or to be preppy.

I have mentioned that I like J. Crew, Lilly Pulitzer, Vineyard Vines and the others as my preppy staples, however I don't believe that the preppy style is limited to any one brand.  Lilly Pulitzer will always be a classic, preppy staple to me, as with a few other brands, and the list can go on and on. However, in recent months, as we have all seen, J. Crew has begun to take a turn for the worse, as evidenced by this:

Oh J. Crew, how I miss your critter shorts and pastel polos of days gone by...

Back to my point, when I shop for clothes, I channel my Grandmother, as my inspiration for being preppy stems from my family. My Paternal Grandparents are the preppiest people I know, and my Grandmother is my idol. I am named after her, and I love her dearly.

Aren't they just darling?

To me, preppy is wearing fun, classic clothes year after year, and buying clothes for quality and not because they're the most fashionable. I don't limit myself to one brand, but I definitely know what styles I like. I can't define what 'preppy' is nor is there one way to be preppy, in my opinion.

What does preppy mean to you?

  1. Just read the other post I can't believe people would say that. J Crew is less preppy than before but you can still find a few nice things in there.

  2. I completely agree with everything you've said in this post. I get some very not-so-nice comments at school because I'm "preppy" as well! Also, J. Crew has gone so down hill that I don't even bother shopping there anymore!

  3. I actually found some cute tops at JCrew this week but overall I don't like what they are coming out with recently :(

I always wonder about the what is preppy debate. Since I'm on the west coast it is so different!
